As a fiber artist, my background is in woven fabrics for both the apparel and upholstery markets. After many years of working in industry, the primary element missing in my life was the freedom to create without restrictions and express my ideas through my art. I have chosen to stay with fiber art for the inherent tactile quality. Quilts have always felt like the place to begin. I paint all of the fabric used in the quilts, and am therefore able to express my ideas completely, with every element being my own.
I begin with natural canvas and a thought- a color story, a photograph, or an image. I then paint many yards of fabric and place them all on the studio wall. At some point several canvases begin to come together in story. This is the process by which I begin each piece. Starting with a paintbrush in hand, and ending with a needle and thread is, in my mind, a full circle. There is an involvement at a deeper level when following all of these steps.
My images have been, so far, the result of everyday life experiences, and constantly revisit what I have grown to refer to as “protective spaces”: nurturing, purposeful environments such as nests, or elements that help to create these spaces such as fences or arched doorways. These are spaces that afford someone a sense of security. I find the weathered surfaces of old barns, or the teetering angles of a fallen fence intriguing. From here the artwork begins to develop.
I hope you enjoy the pieces I am showing on this site, and always look forward to hearing any comments you may have.
